1.What is Corona Surface Treatment?
Corona treatment is a well-established surface treatment process that is widely used in various industries all over the world. The principle of this technology is to use high-frequency and high-voltage corona discharge on the treated surface to generate low-temperature plasma, which causes free radical reactions on the surface, cross-links the polymer, roughens the surface and increases its wettability to polar solvents.
These ions enter the surface of the printed object by electric shock and penetration to destroy its molecular structure, oxidize and polarize the treated surface molecules, and ion electric shock erodes the surface, thereby improving the adhesion of the surface to adhesives, inks and coatings.
Corona treatment has been proven to be the most efficient and practical means to optimize the surface wettability and adhesion of materials. Commonly used on a variety of metals, including aluminum, gold, titanium, and stainless steel; plastics, such as polyethylene and polypropylene; paper and cardboard, and other packaging materials.
2.Why does PE coated paper need corona treatment?
Medium/low density polyethylene (PE) is coated on one side or both sides of the coated base paper in the form of coating, which are called single-sided coating and double-sided coating respectively.
PE coated paper has been widely used in the field of food packaging (such as cola paper cups, hamburger boxes, etc.) because of its good waterproof, oil-proof, and heat-resistant properties. However, since PE coated paper is a non-absorbent material, it is difficult for ink to adhere, so there are strict requirements on its surface pretreatment process and printing ink.
